Portland and Curling

First, welcome Rabbi David! Second, I had a boss who’d moved here from the East Coast — and one day, he walked into my office, shut the door, and asked why everyone kept saying “hello” to him, and what did they WANT?

I told him ‘nothing, they’re just nice, really…’ to which he muttered some East Coast obscenities about how they were ‘Keeping Portland (insert expletive starting with an “F”) Weird alright’ and walked out the door.

Worst. Commute. Ever.

I’m a little like Gretchen…I was on vacation, and watched from home and thought ‘ohhh…that sucks…I think I’ll have another glass of wine…’ Does that count?

Honestly, though, I did feel for each and every one of you…thanks for bringing it to life, PAgent.

When Storytellers Go Wild

Holy bad spelling batman, of course, I meant “McMenamin’s”

» Posted By djtv On November 18, 2009 @ 11:43 pm

Honestly, I blame McMinamin’s.

Chickens Lost and Found

Yes, they laminted the sign…and yes, I’ve heard you can have more if you get permission, as well. I’d worry about other people moving in and saying no, but I’m not sure how it works. I do know that they really DO become like pets. I love my neighbors as if they were my own, and love the everyday wonderful, fresh eggs.

“Aggressive Advocates”

I’ll admit, too, that I once gave in to a chugger I just couldn’t shake and gave him money (yes, it was indeed a man) Everytime I get mail from the organziation, I feel an overwhemling anger and bitterness to them. I rip and throw it away for two reasons. First, it makes me feel better. Two, I like that they are still spending money on sending me their expensive printied materials. Mail away, even pepole at CARE. Keep it coming.

Rarely do I think I have a right to be rude to people who are doing their job, even telemarketers. My chugger rule after a nasty encounter in the Pearl: I ask them nicely, twice. Then, all bets are off. There have to be SOME rules about the way these people, working for charties, behave in public.

Dear PDX Advice Guy

There are also some nice fireworks at Blue Lake Park.

I’m adding Portland Parking Ambassador to my resume.

Is it wrong that I still mutter, even though I know how to used the StupidMeters? (Way better name than SmartMeter…)

For Rapid Transit, they Gallop…

Sure, they’re slow, but it always makes my top ten reasons I love living in Portland: horses in the city. (You can take the girl out of the country…but…)

Late night meetup – Wizardboots @ Kelly’s Saturday

I’m only coming if you bring the famed Wizardboots squirrel light. For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s worth the trip to Kelly’s Olympian just to take a gander at it.

Bob Log III and Willem Maker @ Doug Fir

I wholeheartedly agree…I’ve been to Doug Fir a few times, and it’s easy to play show roulette and just go, because the bands are always great.

Strollin’ for Art

Wow, Jeremy, thanks for the great history of my neighborhood! I enjoy Joan of Arc each time I go around Coe Circle.

Hung Far Low sign returning

Every time I turn the corner of 84 to the Hollywood district, I miss the 7-Up sign with the bottle that filled the glass with bubbles. Yes, new businesses need to be able to put up new signs to mark their place, but the Budwiser sign there now is certainly not as interesting or fun. (And, the Budwiser sign doesn’t mark business place, it was a case of having a permit for a big sign…) Yes, it’s about heritage, but on the other hand I love the new Saucebox sign with the monkey’s, too. Sometimes it’s more about being interesting.

Googley-Eyed

Yes, well, my house was taken in the middle of summer, when the lawn was brown and landscaping dead. Sometimes, I want to ask google if I can have a retake. I’m guessing they will be as amenable as when I asked the lady at DMV to retake my photo.

Yeah, but who’s counting?

Ditto! A nice woman knocked, then, apparently, didn’t want to actually talk to me. Said she wanted to verify my address. Can we not do this from the sidewalk? Woke me up from my Sunday nap. Grump!

KINK FM’s Les Sarnoff loses battle with cancer

Thank you, Betsy, for the post about Les. Like many others, he worked so hard to matter to others, and I believe he did.

The Grande Dame of Portland

I miss the post office. Rumor had it the post office was removed to make room for the judges’ secure parking spaces. True? Not true? Anyone know?

Home in Record Time: Unemployment to Blame?

Karma being what it is, I got my payback this morning with a 30 minute wait on 39th and Sandy getting on to I-84 — but it was all construction (down to one lane). Tonight, a new record, 21 minutes.

TriMet Question of the Day

Obviously there is a difference between your defnination of ‘instant’ and trimet’s definition of ‘instant.’ Just like the defenition of ‘working’ fare machines is, apparently, different between tri-met and its riders. I think a communications session is in order. You could all sit around and define words on a white board. Or, just submit to White Whine blog.

DJtv’s Weekend Roundup: Bargain Hunter is as Bargain Hunter Does

Karen, you are correct! I’ve fixed it in the post — OMSI is $2 on the first Sunday of every month, not every Sunday in February. Thanks!

Nostalgia is the punchline

Wow! Great post MediaChick! I always thought Tom Peterson (and Gloria too!) was a bit of a slick salesman who sought chapter 11 to get out of his debts then change his name (adding Gloria, too!) and reopen under a different name. Who has a Tom Peterson Watch?

But anyone who’s heard the famed “Give ‘em a pickle for free” speech from Bob Farrell himself know that he was a truly good man who beleived customer service was the most important part of his empire. Eventually, he closed his places when he realized times had changed.

A part of Pacific Coast Restaurants, Bob Farrell trained generations of servers from Stanford’s and Newport Bay. They heard the edicts of great customer service from one of the best in the business. I know, I heard it in person and it lives with me to day.

I often ask my self ‘what would Bob do’ when In stuck with a question. The answer is always what is best for the customer. He was a great man, who taught lots of Portlanders how to be the best customer service people they could be, as long as they were willing to listen.
