Looking For Tales of Portland Parking Woes

I actually find it much easier to park downtown then in many other parts of the city. I have a few blocks of meters that never seem to be full or flat lots that I almost always use depending on where I’m going. The lots are nearly always available and sometimes even cheaper than feeding a meter for a longer period of time.

I find parking in the neighborhoods much more of a hassle – going to Hawthorne, Mississippi, Alberta, Belmont, Sellwood etc. If it’s prime time – a weekend evening for example – I’d much rather try to park downtown than in one of those areas.

Just my 2 cents.

More Holy Than Righteous

I met my husband at a Butthole Surfers concert when they were touring for that ill-fated Weird Revolution album…it wasn’t a great show, but I always think of them with great fondness because of that!

(And I too get a kick out of telling that story and getting to say ‘butthole’ to people, especially folks I think are kinda uptight… hee hee…)

“Aggressive Advocates”

Dieselboi – I know you’re typically pretty rational, so maybe you have – but are orgs on your “no giving list” aware of this? Have they been written to – and more than once – that you would fund them, but no longer will? It took more than one annoying person to make you stop giving – they should get more than one email… especially when it truly is those who need the service who will hurt by not getting funding.

I guess I just don’t understand the passion around this issue – sure they can be irritating, but I too work downtown, and just walk by or say no… and I honestly can’t remember a single time I’ve been harassed or followed for not stopping. Even the folks in these pictures look like they’re standing pretty peacefully, looking for someone to give their pitch to…

The Crud: Is it coming for all of us?

Oh yeah – it’s been around since mid January for me – more than two month. Sometimes there have been 3 or 4 days in a row where I feel pretty good, but then it’s back down again. I taught pre-school for a year about 16 years ago – spending my entire day cooped up with snotty toddlers was the only other time I’ve been close to this sick for so long.

Killed off an ear infection with anti-biotics back in the early January portion of the Crud, but I hate the doctor so despite my husband telling me I need to go about every other day I haven’t been in two months – just living on NyQuil and DayQuil 24/7… all I want is to be able to sleep horizontally!

I have never had a flu shot – like I said – I hate doctors – but I’m thinking next yhear I just may!

There’s no place like home… where ever that is…

Yeah – I think probably about 1.5-2 years as well…that was when my roommate I moved out here with and I decided we were ‘settled enough’ that we could get our own apartments and not feel alone.

Sam Adams Should Step Down

If you were in a job interview and were asked if you liked kinky sex position X and while yes, you love to do kinky sex position X, you knew that it had no relevance to the job you were interviewing for, but that your future potential boss was a bit conservative and it could keep you from the getting the job – would you lie to your potential boss and say no you don’t?

Forest Park and The Skyline Tavern

The best part of Skyline is that while they don’t serve any food aside from little bags of chips and nuts, as long as you’re buying beer from them… you can use the huge grill on the back patio. So bring your burgers and brats and have a feast while playing horseshoes or ping pong.

How Are We Doing?

Y’all are doing just fine!

I think because many of the authors are friends, are involved in many of the same ‘scenes’, which includes hanging out at techie events like Beer and Blog, Ignite, etc. – that when one of those events take place there are lots of posts and comments, lots of references to each other – that to someone outside the scene it may come across as cliquey. But knowing many of you myself, I know that is far from the truth. That any stranger walking into one of your Meetups, commenting or what have you, will be welcomed and made to feel at home.

And as far as diversity on the site and doing what it’s “supposed to” – there are of course some authors I like to read more than others. But that’s simply because of similar or dissimilar tastes with those authors.

Keep up the good work!

A Navigation Challenge

I actually think Portland is one of the easiest places to navigate (with the exception of parts of SW where the streets seem to twist and turn and change names randomly)
Everything is laid out in a grid.
Every one-way street has a one-way back the other direction on the next block.
All numbered streets run N-S (unlike places like Seattle, Minneapolis or NYC where you can be on the corner of 5th and 5th…huh?!??!!!)

But even the one year I lived on the west-side and the 3 years I worked out there – I still spent all my time downtown and eastside – so familiarity is a big key.

Altar in the Big Green Sky

Liberals who condemn the beliefs of others simply because they have different beliefs obviously don’t understand the basis of what being an open-minded liberal means.

Where did you vacation when you were young?

I think a long weekend in Chicago, Minneapolis or Kansas City (all 3-4 hour drives from where I lived in Des Moines) were the extent of vacations in my early 20s – usually staying at a friends place who lived in that city – or doing the 6 people in a hotel room thing.

What’s up with the Dutch?

I’m not a huge coffee snob, but I really really like Dutch Bros – so that’s exciting – ’cause there are not drive-thu coffee shops on my way to work – and that location would be.

They also have some strange appeal with skater/snowboarder kids – they all have stickers on their boards and cars.

PORN

I borrowed a book from a friend for a plane trip once, not realizing how ‘steamy’ it was. I am forever reading over the shoulder of the person next to me – and as I turned the pages I think I really did turn quite red!

Westside Justice

A co-worker of mine who got one of those – but was sure she hadn’t been speeding at the time, and had heard that the mechanics aren’t very reliable in many of them over time. So she somehow got copies of the maintenance records. Turns out the machine that got her did indeed have a service order that hadn’t been completed yet – so she got the entire ticket removed. But I bet all the other people it busted had to pay!
