Looking For Tales of Portland Parking Woes

Brewcaster, I visited Philly a few times last year and parked a few times. One thing Philly has that Portland doesn’t is crazy insane undecipherable signage. You’ll have one sign saying parking 8am-10am ok, but right below it a No Parking sign from 9am-9:30 for Street Cleaning M T T (WTF?) and then a 3rd sign below that saying Parking prohibited between 9pm-10am unless with proper permit…..

What I’m saying is that in other cities, sometime it is difficult to know where and when you can park – that is why Parking Wars is so awesome to watch. Portland doesn’t have those issues IMHO. Parking is easy, albeit a little expensive.

I don’t have any problems parking downtown unless I’m trying to save a few cents. Only got 1 ticket in the last 10 yrs. Just pay the meter I guess.

Another theory about why people aren’t going downtown as much is the economy. Downtown was always a destination for shopping to the arts or eating out at a restaurant. These days, people don’t have the money to do that as much. That could explain it a little.

It’s All Greek To Me

I’m not going to miss it. The bigger question though is what will go in its place? Another mattress store? Maybe a Walgreens? More than likely, it will sit empty and decay. I don’t like the Greek Cuisina, but it is a local business that employs people. Oh, and without the Cuisina, what will the police and paramedics do on a random Saturday night? Hang out at Voodoo?

Portland Police: The Problem is Perception

After awhile, honestly, one throws their hands up in the air. We elect officials we think may change the tone and yet they back down the first sign of conflict. What’s one to do?
There are times when the police do make decisions based on what is going on. They are in dangerous situations every day and honestly, we’re Monday morning quarterbacks sometimes. But to shoot a 12 yr old girl is a sign that something is seriously wrong.

Drive to Downtown PDX? Not Any More…

One thing I learned when I ventured on my 2 yr walking spree a couple of years ago was that all those time I thought I was missing out on something and needed to “rush home” didn’t exist. Taking the time to walk places forced me to slow down. I believe we intentionally overbook ourselves because we know we can just hop in the car and zip zap zing, we get to go everywhere and all over the city. I’m guilty of it, I’m not trying to say anyone is wrong. Just throwing out a different perspective. Heck, I drove around a car this past weekend that wasn’t mine because someone loaned it to me. How messed up is that?

“Aggressive Advocates”

divebarwife,
Actually, I’m far from rational some times…. :) (

More than one communication? No. I understand your point, but I counter with – these are large behemoth corporations that showcase themselves as charities. Yes, they do good thing. I grant them that. But would a second email really make it beyond the secretary? No. I don’t believe that. Maybe if I were a foundation or had a ton of money, yes. What’s sad, and has been highlighted by the last two presidential campaigns is that the small donations add up. Too bad they are driving that away.

ijostl, get off your sanctimonious high horse. Yes, some of the chuggers are friendly just as are some of the homeless in the city. They are polite and when one says no thanks, they move on. Yet, as someone who walks downtown every single day, I have to say that the majority of them are aggressive, insulting, overbearing and intimidating. I have seen them corner people smaller than them (men against women.) I have seen them follow people until the person responded aggressively with terse language. I have had them insult me just because I said no. Honesty, I will not -WILL NOT- support Greenpeace or Save the Children ever again and I have money to give. They have burned that bridge. I just hope the Human Rights Campaign got my email and pull their people before they too break the camel’s back.

Sleek, Sexy… and Inconvenient

Where’s Church’s?

I’m so wishing we had a Roscoe’s.

The new trains are nice and all, but the announcer is so loud, you can’t think.

Parking Garage Nostalgia

Great memories. Thanks! I remember always parking there because you could for free for so long. Ahh, Powell’s.

Street of Dreams

Great article. I remember one of the first meetings on renaming Interstate, it was suggested by some that the group try and name a library or park and that there were a couple looking for names. The scoffed at it. They had dug in their heels and would get a street if it meant fighting tooth and nail for it. That’s sad.

$20 front row tickets for RENT

Jmartens,
Yes, I attended last night. I arrived at around 6:45 and the $20 tickets were already gone. I did overhear people stating they had been there since 8am that morning for said tickets.

I wonder if there is a public webcam anywhere in the vicinity that would let us know how long the line is.

Brett

JustinS, I asked and the tickets won’t be lottery-style, but first come first served. Thanks.

Thanks Tammy. Where is she coming from? She’ll have a great time. The group that was on my plane were going to the High Cascades ski camp.

Remember the Ski Jump in Civic Stadium?

PAgent, great post.

Bill, thanks for the great comment. It is wonderful to hear first hand experiences about these events. You’re stories should be recorded for Portland’s archives. Thank you Thank you Thank you for sharing.

The Mad Dash

I would agree. The only downside is the long line. There are many upsides to shopping late night or even early morning if it is 24hr. No one in the aisles. You can weave around with your cart like your drunk. They may have just stocked the shelves, so you get first dibs.

My only other challenge is that it is Safeway. More expensive than my normal store.

Oh, and the pies were fabulous.

Portland Mercury Copyright Infringement

PDXSays, I don’t understand this sentence:

“My point: OurPDX has a publication that works for blog, not so much as journalism. And you can’t have it both ways.”

Regarding “swiped.” I take a photo, share it with the public via Flickr, but then the Mercury uses is so they can make money. I don’t see any of that money. Eventually I get attribution, which is nice and makes me all warm and fuzzy, but overall, yeah, it was swiped and it sucked.

» Posted By dieselboi On May 31, 2009 @ 11:20 am

I will chime in with my two cents. I’m not a professional blogger or photographer – meaning, I don’t get paid for any of this. When someone links to a photo of mine on Flickr, I usually contact them and engage them in conversation letting them know it is a copyrighted photo and if they would like to use it, just ask. Almost all the time, I get attribution and all is good. With the Mercury, all I had to do is ask. My challenge is that I as the owner of the photo has to do the asking. The Merc is famous for calling out other publications on copyright or similar subjects, so why can’t we?

Aaron is a professional photographer. He makes money at it. The photo in question was owned by him and licensed to a client. That’s bread and butter in this economy. I’m all for free and open, but will free and open pay the mortgage? My point is that when you start infringing on someone’s livelihood, that is where the line gets crossed and needs to be addressed.

I love seeing the horse patrol. I grew up over in SE where they live and would see them wandering the hills and valleys as a child.

TrimeTwitter

@Brewcaster. You bring up a good point, but let me counter point. When email was ramping up as a means of communication in the 90′s, many companies had to modify their internal processes in order to deal with this new technology. It didn’t go from 0-80% overnight, it took years. I doubt the number of tweets to Comcast or other companies will go from what it is now to 80% overnight, but companies need to sit back and realize this is a viable means of communication and plan for it accordingly.
