Only 6 More Days ‘Til Pie Nirvana!

I am starting to take my Tums today to get a nice build-up for an iron stomach on Sunday – I cannot wait!

Oh, and I happened to see the look on “the offspring”‘s face when she found out she was not able to make the big event. Not a face I like seeing on a young girl! She will be there in spirit, for sure.

Come on Portland, bring out your best! #mmmpie

Happy Birthday To Us!

Kudos to Betsy and all the authors who have diligently been posting all year – I can’t believe it’s been that long since the site started! I hope to see all of you at the birthday party!

InFarmation and Beer at HopWorks tonight!

I wish I could have been there too. I don’t have any regularly scheduled meetings at that time, however, so I plan to go to the next one and will report back all the Family Farm-y goodness.

Meat Cheese Bread

All I can say is wow. I was on my way to Bunk after all the hype, and yes, the line deterred me quickly to go to the next close by recently-opened sandwich shop. Now I can’t wait to go back.

Everything looked good, so I asked the guy behind the counter what I should get. I mentioned that I tend to veer towards veggie, but like just about everything. His answer: “I like the roasted mushroom sandwich, and you can add bacon.” Perfect.

The roll tasted like the whitest, freshest bread I have ever tasted – with herbs mind you. I devoured it, and yes, a coworker with me said that it was “quite possibly the best breakfast burrito he had ever had.” Once we left, we both apologized about not offering the other an opportunity to taste what we had, we both ate so fast that we forgot.

I just wish they had more places to sit!

Local Food Entrepreneurs Show Their Stuff

I went to this – and it was great fun. So much fun that I think I have decided to commit to the next 12-week class starting in April.

Congrats goes to Sol Pops (I just searched for a web site to link to, but could not find one), who won the competition at the end of the night. Their product is fantastic, available at most of the local farmer’s markets, and will soon turn up at a New Seasons near you!

Band Name Contest

What fun. Ok, here are my attempts:

1) North Country Kindred

Tribute to Bob and the first song on Nashville Skyline, “Girl from the North Country,” which he recorded with Johnny Cash. And cause we live in the North. Also a reference to “kin” as in “kin folk.”

2) Blue Mountain Bootleggers

Blue, as in the color of the flame of moonshine when it’s supposedly safe to drink (as opposed to yellow). Mountain, well, because all good whiskey-soaked rock has something to do with mountain-dwellin folks. And I just like the word bootleggers.

3) Rip City Rebels

Need I explain this one?

Where do you go for autumn pumpkin fun?

After an hour in the car on the road out to Sauvie Island last year, we all gave up, turned around, and went to Uncle Paul’s on Hawthorne. They have great big pumpkins for cheap, and then you can go home and have fun with a carving party.

The best part is that they are right near Burgerville so you can pick up a Ghirardelli Caramel & Apple milkshake with some sweet potato fries – yum!!

I’m hungry, and I’d like to eat soon

I thought it was pretty obvious. On Water Avenue. On the East side. Not many restaurants on that row. I don’t want to slam them too hard and bring the Health Dept. in, I just want to wake them up a little to their customer service and slowness issues.

I love how people who want to rabble-rouse neglect to add their identity!

Portland MEAT Pies – Pie Off

What fun. I had such a great time, and would love to try your meat pie(s) one day. Maybe at the next OurPDX meetup? I’ll bring mine if you bring yours!

Pie-Off: Our Eyewitness Report

How much fun was that? And to think I almost did not go! Thanks to everyone for all of your support – what an incredible turnout.

Thank you Lizzie, Lelo, and Gretchen for all your hard work; and a big shout out to Gary, Kir and Jack! I was very proud of my entry and I appreciate your kudos.

I feel very humbled to have won this contest with so many talented bakers involved.

Like living on the SUN

I pick #6 too, yet in the other direction of Motor. Planning to go up to some swimmin’ hole somewhere and chill out. Thanks for the Camo tips, Charlie!

Trusting your data to the cloud

You’re absolutely right – I just checked my account’s oldest email and it’s from 2004 – post updated.

Follow-up to this post:

I just lost my access AGAIN! Thanks to ev at Twitter, I can read it at an HTML URL. But wow, this must be a ploy to get us all to purchase the Premier version that Chris mentioned.

Seems like everyone around me is in the same boat. What’s up, Google?

Duck Tongue and Other Delicacies

Awesome post, Motor. I absolutely love Wong’s King – especially for Dim Sum on weekends. It’s very crowded, and they set up rows of chairs classroom-style in what looks to be an office building lobby for those of us who don’t show up right at 10:30AM.

I tried tripe there once – my sister was in from SC and we thought we’d be adventurous – it did NOT taste good. Mounds of cow stomach that look like large honeycomb overflowing from the bowl was an interesting sight. Otherwise, quality of food for the price cannot be matched!

The Living Skyscraper

@anonymous – I’m not *just* concerned about food distance – although, when your food comes from 7030 miles away, maybe you should be. It’s just one contributing factor to greenhouse gas emissions, as the study you point to says (thank you, by the way, for the reference – the more studies we have out there the better in my opinion).

My perspective is that we have to look at all of the ways we are impacting the earth in the choices that we make, not just the obvious ones.

Grow your own, by the square foot

Ok, zucchini is now on the list. Spinach and potatoes soon to follow when I create another plot in the yard.

You know you live in a bike town when…

Even the Wall Street Journal has singled out Portland as “Next on the list to institute a bike-sharing program, just after Washington, DC.” Here’s the original article from bikeportland.org.

I have a feeling we’ll make this happen soon based on our momentum – what say you?

Celebrate Bastille Day July 12 with PIX

I, too, have many replies from the latest Pix newsletter, which has provided me with quite a few laughs this morning. People on the list just do not understand that “reply all” to a newsletter will, in fact, reply all.

TriMet MAX pimping Toyota trucks – incongruous

That is great. The Tundra looks like it’s driving over the MAX train. Maybe a good idea for a commercial to show how bad-ass it is?

I’m about ready to go crawl under a rock

“Speaking of burgers does anyone out have a hidden gem that can contend with the greatness of Slow Bar, Le Pigeon, Stanich’s or Castagna?”

Yes. My favorite burger is that of Carafe, preferably sitting outdoors during the summer at lunch, with blue cheese and bacon please. From the menu:

HAMBURGER ON KEN’S ARTISAN BUN
freshly ground & seasoned Oregon Country Beef 8.50
with choice of Gruyère, bleu, white cheddar or Camembert add 1.00
add smoked bacon 1.00
add a fried farm egg 1.00

Pure heaven, served up medium rare.

A Travesty of Strawberry Proportion

Amazingly, I found not only local, but ORGANIC, strawberries at Freddie’s (SE 60-ish & Glisan location) about six weeks ago. I was startled, and have not seen them since (probably because I don’t shop there all that much). Maybe it’s “we get local when we can then we provide the Mexican/California variety as filler?” Who knows.

Sunday Parkways: Just the Beginning?

Portland took some big strides all week last week—and it sounds like Sunday Parkway was the crowning achievement (was bummed I could not make it).

I was at the Toward Carfree Cities closing event on Friday night, and met people from all over the country who look to Portland as a model for urban planning when it comes to bike-ability. A big shout out to all the folks at Carfree Portland who did an amazing job all week long and really represented our fair city well!
