Capturing the “Essence of Portland”

Last Thursday on Alberta Street on a hot summer night.

Portland band “Blind Pilot” on NPR

Heard the piece on NPR this morning. The music sounded great, and you have to admire them for their tenacity. And for hanging out of in an Astoria warehouse doing their music. Good stuff.

The Making of Rain & Blood – Part 2

Post Show:

Rotture – Awesome. Reminds me of what I liked about the old Satyricon. Dark, smelly, frumunda cheese, hell, satan, Hamms tall boys.

Sound: Good presence through the PA. Sound guy knows what he is doing. Nice elevated pie-wedge stage. Good times.

Smoking porch – Ample, covered, plenty of room to get busy with your black cancer lung.

Right On John – Fantastic as always. No cigar box, just the Gibson semi-hollow body. Voice sounded great last night.

New York Dolls-esque band. Sounded good. Vocalist was charismatic, I could not hear the vocals over the guitar. Would like to hear more from these guys.

Pure Country Gold – Oh hell yeah. This two piece tore it up. I was mesmerized by the drummer’s shredded drum sticks. Good catchy punk music.

Thee Headliners – Great times. Solid show. Played through the album. The band is in good shape for their Southwest tour coming up soon.

There’s no place like home… where ever that is…

For me, it took two years. It takes awhile. It’s worth the wait though.

Cheers,

The Band: Stage Fright

I like that WB. Thank you for the kind words and for advice on the good luck charm. I am extremely superstitious. I love charms and incantations. I think it’s because my parents used to drag me to Catholic church when I was a kid.

The Band: Local Songwriters on “The Well Crafted Song”

Editorial Note: I miscommunicated with Ghostwriter about the day I would be posting this. It was my fault. I edited the post to include his words.

We should compare notes at the next meetup. You and I think alike about these things.

I’m glad you enjoyed the post. I hope to follow up with these and other artists. I’m trying to decide whether to buy a video recorder or just an audio recorder.

Resuscitate your social life and learn CPR, too!

Thank you for posting this. I witnessed a near-drowning in Mexico several years ago. I stood by unable to help because my training is so out of date. It was a bad feeling. I need to sign up.

The Band: How to Wreck a Recording Session

Yeah, staying chill is a big part of it. Fights in the studio can get ugly. The recording engineer ends up playing the psychologist, like Doctor Phil on Oprah.

Thanks for commenting.

Fair enough, Will. Thanks for the comment.

Good point Morty!

I would be interested in hearing a war story of yours about how a particular band member screwed things up, and what the rest of the band did about it.

You can make it anonymous, of course. Names changed to protect the innocent. And what not.

You said it Joe. Basically, the whole Portland music community is a bunch of volunteers or underpaid professionals who do it for the love of it. We need to be good to each other. Once you’ve been here awhile, as you have, you’ve seen it all and can smell a rat a mile away. Someone who you knew tangentially from seven years ago becomes your new bass player. And so on.
