“I Thought Of That While Riding My Bike”*
You can re-use those old campaign signs! Paint over and use them for something else, or make DIY bike fenders so you can ride your bike even when it’s not sunny. http://www.smilepolitely.com/culture/do-it-yourself_fenders/

Drive to Downtown PDX? Not Any More…
I think you just ran into a cranky parking meter attendant (is that what they call them now?). Everything would have been fine otherwise, yes? And if you’re keeping your downtown driving to a minimum, well, that’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned.

I can’t think of anything. I’m busy trying to figure out how anyone can possibly pump their own gas.

How to organize a conference in Portland in 6 (sort of easy) steps
GREAT POST. Awesome day of learning, and now a great resource for conference planning? You rock.

Dude. I <3 you. Yes, I let the kids watch other people’s fireworks, because, well, what would be the point of keeping them in? But we never buy our own. But when the neighbors started in with the loud and illegal, my 9 year old actually got scared enough to go indoors – because it does, indeed, sound like you’re under fire.
And every year, I am thankful that I don’t have to raise my children under fire. I wish no one had to.

I’m in what I considered a fairly stable job, but school finances being the way they are, who knows? The school district could decide to eliminate or scale back my position – it’s happened to other people I know already.
I’m not freaking out about it, which is good, but maybe we should be doing more to prepare for the worst.

OMG. It’s an actual picture of you! Now I might recognize you. Or I might stare and wonder if you’re really you.

Portland Mercury Copyright Infringement
Wow.
I think the Merc has responded well in each situation, although they might want to evaluate their training procedures (and this blog post may well encourage them to do so).
PDXsays had one point I was interested in — that mainstream news outlets will often use the words “accused” or “alleged” instead of stating outright that an act has been committed. I looked back over the post to see whether these words should have been used, but IMO, it’s not necessary — this is a first-person account of things that actually happened, and that have been acknowledged by both parties.

Maybe the TriMet person doesn’t know to check their “mentions” tab?
» Posted By Kathleen McDade On May 13, 2009 @ 11:32 am
Oh, interesting – that used to be an unofficial feed of service alerts; I didn’t realize TriMet had actually taken over the account.

QOD – What have you planted so far?
NOTHING! I did some digging and weeding in early February, but every time I’m going to plant something I’m either sick or it’s raining. I should do some indoor stuff instead.

I’m guessing you still need a valid fare, even if the machine is GONE.

Why Closing Half the City Schools Doesn’t Work
In retrospect, I would say that most schools could have safely been open for all or most of the week, if schools and parents were willing and prepared to take appropriate precautions. For instance, it would be much safer if parents would put kids on the school bus rather than driving them in. Or, if they would dress kids appropriately and have them walk. Or take Tri-met if neither of those options works.
But the reality is that not all of those things happen. So, school gets closed, or if it’s open, a lot of kids stay home (134 kids absent at my school on Tuesday; don’t know about Thursday).

You might have heard somewhere that I did not shop.
Thanks for posting the Choose Local link — I knew there was probably something like that going on, but didn’t have the info.

Teenage Suicide (Don’t Do It)*
First of all, love the Heathers!
I haven’t seen the picture you speak of, but I have had trouble with “Story Not Found” on O-live recently. So you’re not the only one.

How do you like your links to behave?
I prefer opening to a new tab, and like Jason I usually right-click/command-click links as I read. In fact, I have my browser set to stay in the original window after clicking, so I usually just read all of the things I clicked on after I finish the original article or blog post.
So, technically I guess I prefer opening to a new window, but I’m willing to do the work myself.

Jackass and proud of it!
If the driver of the car is allowed to express their opinion, so am I. No one said anything about not allowing them to have the stickers. We (not speaking for everyone, just noting that more than one person seems to agree) just don’t like them.

«« Back To Stats PageI have to laugh, because this is where I grew up — it’s home to me! And we’re definitely Portland and not Gresham. I’m not familiar with the Cheep Cheep Chicken, though — must be a later addition (I’m in Parkrose now).
