After taking 80 minutes to get from 11th/Hawthorne to 42nd/Sandy, I made my way to Panera and waited there for a couple hours with wifi and a nice bowl of soup. After the roads had cleared out a bit I hopped onto Sandy eastbound and traffic was pretty smooth out to 205. The freeway was wet, speed-limit driving from there up into Vancouver.

Drive to Downtown PDX? Not Any More…
I don’t really go downtown unless I need to for a meeting… it’s a pain from a transportation standpoint (as you’ve noted, parking is a pain, and riding MAX at 4mph through downtown is maddening). I can buy pretty much anything elsewhere without having to deal with the downtown hassles. I’m sure it’s great for everyone who lives in the Pearl and rides around on a bike, but that’s so not me.

Someone Tried to Burn Down My House
Wow. What a scary experience. Glad to know that you had a positive experience with the Police and Fire bureaus, since usually when we’re blogging about them it’s related to some sort of misconduct or alleged screw-up.
Oh, and I think you forgot a tag: #getoffmylawn
(too soon to laugh?)

Welches Con Man *Still* on the Loose!
The best part of this incident was watching Betsy cut him off, watching him regroup, then get cut off again.

Yep. 4 more seats per car x 2 car train = 8 more seats per train.

I looked into the capacity. According to TriMet, the new cars have 4 more seats than the old ones.

It’s been an interesting year and I’m glad that I’ve been able to contribute in some small way. Here’s to another few thousand posts…

Pie Champ 2.0 recap – what a night!
What a night. My mouth was bigger than my stomach. Those pies seemed to get bigger throughout the night. My hat is off to Chris and his piemastership, and a big thanks to Betsy for coordinating the fund raising.

I know he’s not competing, but I was just setting a standard for what it’ll take to get me to do a tofu pie

I know they have a variety of pies and I haven’t seen any rules about particular ones needing to be consumed, but I’ll state it up front: I’ll only do tofu if Raven does brisket.

Portland Mercury Copyright Infringement
I’m curious… since you feel that this wasn’t handled correctly… if you were in the same position how would you have handled it?

You asked what is the point of this article? My intention was to bring public exposure to the problem in the hopes that the pattern of behavior will change, since dealing with it privately hasn’t led to a resolution. Legal options were considered; I hoped that in the grand scheme of things this wasn’t something big enough that it could only be resolved by a lawsuit.
I’m not entirely sure how to respond to the rest of your comment but with regards to the final paragraph, if you have any examples of repeated copyright infringement on OurPDX, I know that we’d love to hear about it so that it can be addressed. I’ve never claimed that the Merc needs to be perfect… I can forgive an occasional honest mistake. If the issue had gone away after the first incident or even the second, this blog post wouldn’t have been written.

Chris: the short version of “What should the aspiring blogger do when he wants to publish someone else’s photo on his blog?” is ask. Once you have permission, it’s possible (and probable) that the content owner may want you to host the photo on your own server.

Agree completely… in my mind, the community was successful at what needed to happen (which was on Friday, by getting US Bank to come to the table with a serious offer). Beyond that, it’s a matter for Eva and David to discuss with the legal folks, and I fully intend to support them with whatever option they choose. Doing any sort of Monday-morning quarterbacking of their business plan isn’t going to be productive.

SLL: Introducing Weekly Access
I got a chance to listen to this today on my way to work… can’t wait to hear the first WeeklyAccess podcast. Should be a great complement to the many fun things going on around Portland.

When you lose a game by 3 points, yeah, a bad call by a ref might have made a difference. But that game? I don’t think that was the fault of the stripes…

Capturing the “Essence of Portland”
Warning: entering the contest gives ownership of the winning photo to CBS. From the website:
: Winning contestant will be required to sign a legal agreement granting CBS Radio Portland, d.b.a. KINK.fm 100% ownership of the photograph.
No thanks.

Hawthorne is a good place for Freddie’s to try this experiment. I suspect that if they went through this exercise at one of their suburban stores about a mile from my house, folks would be pissed.

Interesting post…. just yesterday I wandered past the scaffolding and plastic and wondered what was up with the construction. Apparently it’s one of those Portland mysteries. We should sic The Square folks on this topic…

Dave, when the biggest political stories of the year thus far for city leadership have been Adams’ affair, Randy’s sign, the collective soccergasm, and a large freeway bridge project, I doubt that Bojack is the only one who thinks they’re probably 75% distracted by things that really should be non issues (or at least WAY down on the priority list).

I can’t believe we’ve gone 24 hours on this post and nobody has noted that Sam Adams is the mayor. Depending on your viewpoints, that probably says something.

I attempted to stimulate the downtown economy last week. I needed to pick up several picture frames. In the ‘burbs I would’ve headed to Michael’s, but the nearest one was in Clackamas. On my lunch hour I went downtown and walked to three different stores (two chains plus one local).
I walked around for about 30 minutes. One store didn’t have what I needed. One didn’t have enough of what I needed (I needed six identical frames) and seemed overpriced. The third store was WAY overpriced. I was harassed by several people to sign up for whatever political agenda they were pushing and got to dodge a bunch of panhandlers.
After work, I drove straight to Michael’s, where I could park (for free), walk in the store, walk out with six frames for the price of what two would’ve cost me downtown, and be on my way in about 10 minutes.
I’d love to buy things downtown, if it wasn’t so hard and expensive.

Police Patrols Parked in the Park
I’m with dieselboi – isn’t Portland supposed to be a fan of community-oriented policing? If the point is for the officers to be there as a deterrant, why not get out of their car, wander the park a bit, chat with folks at the MAX platform, etc?
