Aha! When I was on the #6 this morning, I saw a bunch of folks heading towards the Convention Center all wearing different colored jackets.

Reading that made my mouth water. Give me a Hebrew National with mustard and sauerkraut and I’m happy. I’m a simple girl that way.

Diamonds definitely aren’t my BFF. Considering the violence caused in gathering them, I’ll pass.
But this post should carry the disclaimer that not all PDX women are on the look-out for a guy to give her material things. That said, if that’s what they want, at least they’re upfront about it.
Now, if we can talk about the wishy-washiness of PDX men…

That’s it, I’m playing the lottery. When I win, I’ll fund this.

RE: passionate energy being focused elsewhere…If that can mean asking what the hell MIPO was thinking when they came up with those category names for the event, I’m all for that. Seriously, what the hell?!?

@Barbara: Somehow, I don’t think the people of Darfur, nor the United Nations, would consider ending performances of centuries-old plays as a way that would instantly end violence against women.
You say in one breath that “we” should write new stories to replace plays such as Rigoletto, yet in the next breath state that you can’t because of oppression. So, which is it? Who is this mystical power stopping you, you as in Barbara, from creating new stories to permeate the hearts and minds of Portlanders to replace the things you feel are wrong with the status quo?
» Posted By A. L. Venable On May 10, 2009 @ 3:33 am
@barbara: While the services provided by the Crisis Line are crucial, I have to take serious issue with your extrapolation of a group attending an opera and making a rather damning inference that those who appreciate the performance are a) subject to being violent against their partners; or b) silently supporting those who do commit such acts; and/or c) racists and sexists.
Wow.
Let’s step back a few hundred feet and look at this from a different perspective that isn’t so narrowly focused on one aspect — violence/degradation towards women or other groups.
Can we not appreciate art without putting it through our various modern-day filters? I don’t see many people calling for the “Merchant of Venice” to stop being performed, for example. Never mind the continual reinforcement of how women are focused on landing a man and if they can’t, they’ll steal someone else’s, which is a meme that runs rampant through most films out of Hollywood these days.
While you may have respect for those who are part of the Portland Opera organization, again, it seems as if you are considering them willing participants in perpetuating centuries-old stories. Remove any opera written that doesn’t include violence, sexism, racism, and any other –ism, and there wouldn’t be very much left.
Again, the points you raised are important, but I have to wonder about the approach. Having a dialogue about these issues is important, but expressing them in a way that doesn’t implicate complicity is as well.

Time is Running Out: Submit your Ignite Portland 6 Proposal!
Indeed, it will be very interesting to see how those who attend Monday’s town hall react to the various proposals.

I attended the “Crazy Enough” play Tuesday night. At the end as the audience is shuffling out, Storm Large popped out again from a side door and goes, “THE BLAZERS WON!!!!” A huge cheer was let out from the audience, so even though we weren’t at the game, we were still rooting for the team. It was a very cool experience.

A woman stopped by my home on April 20 to do this. She handed me a half-sheet of paper noting that she was from the Census Bureau and mentioned she didn’t need to speak with me. I felt kinda weird closing the door on her while she stood there making her notes, but she was nice enough.

This is very cool. I go by the Lloyd/Rose Quarter Burgerville every day. I’m not a big fast food person, but I’ll definitely stop in to support the business and their sustainability efforts.

Wizardboots’ triumphant return
*covers ass*
Have a great show in SF!
I can attest to the aura of Portland and Oregon outside the state. Last year, I had to travel to Tulsa for work. At the airport, when the TSA guy was checking my ID, he goes, “Oregon…You guys have good beer.”

OurPDX shared links for March 30th
RE: Billy Joel & Elton John concert — I’m admittedly biased, but for the cost of one of the top-tier tickets, which would likely cost around $200 with the service fees included, one could go to over a dozen shows featuring local bands in a smaller, more intimate setting. I’d rather support the local bands in this economy.

The trains were purchased last June for the Green line: http://ourpdx.com/2008/07/new-max-trains-coming-this-fall/. Guess they’re using them on the other lines to test them out.

There’s no place like home… where ever that is…
@Christina/Seeger – Ditto on the glimpses of Mt. Hood. I love when I’m on a bus or the MAX on a clear day and am able to get a good view.

I’ll mark three years in PDX this April. It does seem to take about 18 months to two years for the “home” feeling to arrive. Even though PDX is smaller than LA, it does take more time to get your footing, find folks to hang out with, etc.
For me, I got that feeling when I moved into my current home in the fall of 2007. I was finally able to unpack everything and make my home feel like home and not a temporary place to crash. It also helped that I joined a few social groups to get out and about.
I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

@Jim Dittmer – Jim, that’s an interesting thought and as we continue to go through this economic funk, people will start to remember those lessons learned from their parents and/or grandparents. In that case, stores like Kitchen Kaboodle would hopefully make it through if more people opt for home entertaining and look to KK to get the tools and gadgets to make that possible.
